Blue4All at European Ocean Days 2026: Turning Ambition into Action for Marine Protection

At this year’s European Ocean Days in Brussels, one message stood out clearly: Europe is not short on ambition for marine protection, but delivering real impact remains the challenge. Blue4All contributed to the discussion by showcasing practical tools, engaging with stakeholders, and advancing solutions to make marine protected areas more effective on the ground.

The European Ocean Days, held in early March 2026 in Brussels, brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to advance Europe’s ocean agenda under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters.” The discussions reflected a strong and growing momentum: Europe has set ambitious targets for marine protection, but the key challenge now is ensuring these commitments translate into real, measurable impact in the water.

Blue4All actively contributed to this dialogue, engaging with stakeholders across sectors and showcasing practical solutions developed within the project and the wider MPA Community Network. Together with partners, Blue4All co-hosted a booth that highlighted how tools and collaboration can support more effective marine protected areas. A central focus was our MPA Solutions Hub, currently in its alpha version and set to launch in summer 2026, which will bring together tools and resources for MPA management from across projects into one accessible platform. The strong interest in the Hub confirmed a recurring message throughout the event: while many valuable tools already exist, they are often fragmented and difficult to access, limiting their real-world uptake.

Blue4All also contributed to the 6th EU Blue Parks Community Workshop on 4 March, where discussions focused on the next phase of the European Blue Parks initiative. A key takeaway was that while Europe has made progress in expanding MPA coverage, effectiveness remains a major challenge. It is not only about how much of the ocean is protected, but how well these areas are managed, how connected they are, and whether they deliver tangible ecological outcomes.

Discussions repeatedly highlighted the importance of aligning conservation with sustainable use. In particular, stronger collaboration with local stakeholders, including fishers, was identified as essential, as sustainable fishing practices are closely linked to the success and acceptance of MPAs. At the same time, there is still a lack of shared approaches to defining and implementing concepts such as strict protection and restoration, as well as to monitoring their effectiveness. While more standardisation would be beneficial, it must remain flexible enough to reflect differences in national contexts and data availability.

A clear concern raised throughout the workshop was the risk of MPAs becoming “paper parks,” existing primarily to meet policy targets rather than delivering real impact. Addressing this requires not only stronger management and enforcement, but also adequate resources. Many MPAs across Europe remain underfunded and understaffed, highlighting the need for improved financing mechanisms, including the mobilisation of private funding. In this context, the financial guidance developed within the MPA Community Network represents an important contribution to ongoing efforts.

Another strong message was the need to better connect existing knowledge and tools. The positive response to the MPA Solutions Hub during the discussions demonstrated how relevant such a platform is for practitioners and decision-makers alike, and reinforced its role as a key output of Blue4All.

Overall, the European Ocean Days provided an important opportunity to connect policy ambition with practical solutions. For Blue4All, the event reinforced the value of bridging science, policy, and on-the-ground experience, and of working closely with initiatives such as the MPA Community Network. Returning from Brussels, the project moves forward with new partnerships, fresh insights, and a strengthened commitment to supporting effective, well-managed, and resilient marine protected areas across Europe.
