The article presents a systematic review of 100 peer-reviewed papers on ecosystem service valuation in MPAs and MPA networks. It examines both monetary and non-monetary valuation methods and highlights the importance of combining these approaches to better capture the full range of ecological and socio-economic values associated with MPAs. The review also identifies important methodological gaps, particularly regarding supporting and regulating ecosystem services, as well as non-use and option values, and outlines areas where further methodological development is needed.
