BLUE4ALL will develop science-based tools for achieving Marine Protected Areas that meet conservation and restoration objectives, while addressing the needs and concerns of all stakeholders
We will work with stakeholders from 25 Living Labs and Information Sites in the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea and North East Atlantic regions to develop tools for preserving and restoring the marine environment in a socially sustainable and acceptable way.

As part of the UN Ocean Decade Conference, held in Barcelona from April 8-9th, 2024, we organised the session "Become an MPA manager for a day!" - A roleplaying game that put the audience into the shoes of an MPA manager and the challenges they commonly face.

Making Marine Protection Visible: Lessons from Nature Park KatiÄ
Nature Park KatiÄ stretches across 47 kilometres of Montenegroās Adriatic coast, protecting seagrass meadows, coral communities, underwater caves, and a wide variety of marine life. These ecosystems also underpin the tourism economy built around the coast. But protection on paper does not always translate into protection in practice. Many of the people swimming, snorkelling, boating, or jet skiing in the area are unclear about where the protected area begins, which rules apply, or why the site matters. Last summer, Blue4All set out to examine that gap. Through fieldwork in and around KatiÄ, project partners explored how the protected area is understood, experienced, and used.

Monetary valuation methods: Benefit transfer
The benefit transfer method estimates the economic value of ecosystem services at an MPA by adapting existing valuation estimates from comparable sites, avoiding the need for new primary data collection. It is a fast and resource-efficient approach, but its reliability depends strongly on the ecological and socio-economic similarity between the original study site and the policy site.
