Blue4All WEBINAR - Towards Equity and Justice in Marine Protected Areas: Tools for Fairer Governance
How can marine protected areas (MPAs) be planned and managed in ways that enhance ocean justice and equity? Join us for a 90-minute webinar introducing the newly developed Blue4All Justice Assessment and Deliberation Tool and the IUCN Guidebook for assessing and improving social equity in marine conservation, designed to support practitioners in strengthening equity and justice in marine conservation.
This interactive session will:
- Set the scene with global principles and guidelines on governance, equity, and justice in nature conservation (Cécile Fattebert, IUCN)
- Present existing SAGE tool through experiences gained in a Blue4All case study (Moses Adjei, Wageningen University)
- Introduce and demonstrate the IUCN Guidebook for assessing and improving social equity in marine conservation (Nathan Bennett, WWF and IUCN)
- Introduce and demonstrate the Blue4All Justice Assessment and Deliberation Tool (Riku Varjopuro and Aino Rekola, Finnish Environment Institute)
- Provide space for discussion on improving social equity and justice in marine conservation by applying different tools and Q&A
Are you an MPA manager, conservation practitioner, or policymaker looking for practical ways to strengthen equity and justice in marine conservation? Then this webinar is for you!

Description: While hundreds of nations have committed to the global 30x30 target, much work remains to reach that goal and sustainably manage the remaining 70%. Regulatory protections are crucial for marine management efficacy, and accurate data on in-place management measures are essential for assessing existing marine protections and informing the creation of new areas. However, collecting and interpreting marine regulations can be challenging due to often unavailable or difficult-to-access legal instruments. Overlapping measures and siloed management add further complexities. ProtectedSeas Navigator contains data on worldwide regulations for MPAs, fishery management areas, and other place-based marine managed areas (MMAs) and considers restrictions cumulatively across overlapping areas using spatial aggregation techniques to provide insights into overall protection. This cumulative analysis of regulations in overlapping marine managed areas offers insights into overall uses and protection across ocean spaces, enabling better protection assessments, planning, and management. As an example, initial analysis in California revealed several ocean spaces where individual MMA protections were minimal, yet when combined with protections from other overlapping MMAs, resulted in more highly regulated spaces with enhanced protection.
